Lana Del Rey For H&M

What do you guys think of the new shots of Lana Del Rey for H&M?! We sort of love them, but aren’t entirely sure she’s the appropriate H&M cover girl. Just looking at these shots makes us feel a little moody and depressed. She’s just so dark, and H&M certainly has a little edge, but c’mon it’s summer and this is a mainstream store! Can we have something a little happier please? In fairness, the promo shots are meant for H&M’s fall campaign, but if so, then keep ‘em under wraps until then! But regardless, she does look gorgeous, and it did get our attention (and the rest of the internet’s). So in that sense, the campaign’s been successful.

What do you think, do these shots of Lana Del Rey for H&M make you want to shop there any more or less?

We saw a lot of great looks on celebrities at Comic-Con this year! Here are our favorites:

  1. Nikki Reed: We love the femininity of Nikki’s sweet peplum shirt and pink silk shorts. The sparkly bag adds a little bit of comic-con fun.
  2. Kate Beckinsale: Does this women ever have an ugly day? We love her fierce leather pants, and the way she contrasts them with a chic white blazer.
  3. Lea Michelle: This is the perfect Comic-Con ensemble. It’s fun, flirty, and a bit quirky. We love the pop of the red shoes.
  4. Michelle Williams: Michelle Williams looks like a fun, funky Audrey Hepburn in this patterned shift dress.
  5. Jessica Biel: Jessica Biel looks so classy, and yet her hot pink shoes add just the right amount of quirky for Comic-Con.

It’s time to stock up on sandals! Here are the top styles for summer 2012:

1. Suede: We love these fringe-y Minnetonka’s for $49.95 on Amazon.

2. Animal Print: We like animal print best when it’s understated, like in this simple thong style by MIA for $49.95 on Amazon.

3. Metallic: These House of Harlow sandals are the definition of amazing to us. You’ll pay a pretty penny for them ($250 on Amazon), but that’s okay because you’ll probably never want another pair of sandals again. How could you beat these?

4. Natural Wedges: A pair of casual wedges in natural earthy colors is so laidback and summery and goes great with a tan! This pair by Dolce Vita is just $89 on Amazon.

5. Buckles:  Buckles add a little edge to an otherwise summery style! This pair by Pour La Victoire is $113 on Amazon.

Looking for a little Summer style inspiration? Here are the top fashion trends as we head off into Summer 2012!

  1. Big Hats: Sunburns and wrinkles are out! Big floppy hats protect you from the sun, protect your hair from dryness and fading, and look oh so chic!
  2. Denim Shirts: Denim shirts are cool, hip, casual, tomboyish and a little rocker-chic.
  3. Midi Dresses: This summer isn’t about the mini or the maxi dress: it’s all about the midi!
  4. Printed Pants: Kristin Stewart caused quite a buzz when she stepped out in these brightly printed pants. And now everyone’s wearing a similar look! Keep whatever you wear on top simple for the best “statement” effect.
  5. Bandeau’s: We must admit, we’re a little shy about this trend, but if you can pull it off then please do! If nothing else, it’s a cute beach look!

If you’re about to start swimsuit shopping, you might be interested to know what styles are trending for Summer 2012. This summer, swimwear is modern, playful, and a bit sassy. Here are the looks we’re loving right now:

  • Mix and Match: We love mix n match bikini’s! Especially when one piece is a print and the other is a solid! It has a great devil-may-care quality to it. Ashely Olsen got the look right when she paired a striped crochet triangle top with plain black bottoms.
  • Cutouts: We love cutout one pieces because they give you the extra coverage and long slimming lines of a one piece but don’t skimp on sexiness at all! Pregnant Kristin Cavillari looks adorable in this black one piece.
  • Crochet: Crochet is a nice change from typical spandex. It has a really cool bohemian vibe. Gisele looks casual cool in this brown crochet bikini.
  • Vintage: The vintage look is so adorable, but it definitely takes a particular personality to pull it off. Taylor Swift looks adorable in this striped retro bikini:
  • Metallic: Metallic suits are everywhere this season! They’re fun, vibrant, and the way they shimmer in the sun is oh-so-sexy! Kim Kardashian looks pretty smouldering in her silver and gold bikini:

Colored skinny jeans are everywhere and they’re sure to be everywhere this summer. Colored jeans create a bright, sunny look perfect for summer. The key to pulling of this look is to pair them with a darker, more neutral top and accessories. Here’s a little celebrity inspiration:

  1. Kate Middleton in Coral Skinny Jeans Kate wears these bright coral skinnies like pro. She really softens their color by pairing them with a dark navy blazer and plain black pumps. Your first thought is not “whoa those are bright pants!” and that’s exactly as it should be.

  2. Stacey Keibler in Red Skinny Jeans We love red skinny jeans because they work brilliantly for day or night. Here, Stacy Keibler makes them super sexy by pairing them with a black shirt and heels.
  3. Malin Akerman in Bright Blue Skinnies Malin Akerman looks so chic and stunning in these bright blue skinny jeans. Like Stacey Keibler, she dressed them down with black but the effect is totally different: less sexy and more polished. Note to self: pair colored skinnies with black.
  4. Camilla Alves in Purple Skinny Jeans We love the way Camilla lightened up her purple skinnies with a white top and ivory heels. Super chic.
  5. Cameron Diaz in Pale Pink Skinny Jeans Oh Cameron, you got this so right. The color feels so subtle here. It adds a definite lightness and femininity but it’s not quite so “look at me” as the other colors.

Wedding Hair: Down Or Up?

How will you wear your hair on your wedding day? In a classic chignon? Long flowing waves? Or a half up-half down style? A lot of brides who wear their hair down on a regular basis want to wear their hair down for the wedding but fear they’ll look back on pictures and wish they’d worn a more “timeless” look. Kate Middleton famously wore her down for her wedding to Prince William, despite everyone’s expectation that she’d wear her hair up since the affair was so formal. Kate supposedly said she wanted to look like herself. If you’ve been wrestling with the decision whether to wear your hair up or down at your wedding, consider the following:

  • Your Venue: If you’re having your wedding in a church, an opera house, or a theater, then an up-do is probably most appropriate. But if you plan to get married in a barn, on a ranch, or on the beach, consider wearing your hair at least half down.

Natural settings lend themselves very nicely to natural, free-flowing hair.

  • Your Personal Style: Don’t wear an up-do just because someone else (your mom, your bridesmaids, whoever) tells you you should. You’ll feel most beautiful on your wedding day if you feel like yourself. Are you normally a t-shirt and jeans girl? Then a fussy up-do will probably make you feel uncomfortable.
  • The Weather: Even though we recommended hair down for a beach wedding, if it’s a particularly windy or rainy day then you may want to wear your hair in a secure style just to be safe. You can still probably get away with a half up-half down do, but just ask your stylist to make sure it’s tightly secured so no pieces will be falling in your face.
  • Pictures: Peek-a-boo bangs may be sexy on a day to day basis, but in pictures they can be a nightmare. It’s okay to have a couple loose, narrow tendrils but if your hair is in your face in all your pictures you’ll be really sad.

  • You Gut Instinct: Probably best not to over think this one. Try to think back on the original vision you had for your wedding day–did you imagine your hair up or down? Go with whatever your heart wants.
  • Your Future Hubby: If you’ve thought through all of the above and still can’t decide, consider how you think your future hubby would most like to see you look on the big day. Usually even the most indecisive bride can arrive at a decision when she imagines what she wants her husband to see walking down the aisle.

It seems every year Coachella draws more and more celebrities. In attendance this year: Lindsay Lohan, Lauren Conrad, Lea Michelle, Diane Kruger, Emma Watson, Vanessa Hudgens, Katy Perry, Kate Bosworth, and so so many more. As much fun as it is to see all these A-Listers in one place, the best part is, of course, seeing what they’re wearing! The theme of Coachella fashion is always very Boho, and the celebrities certainly come dressed appropriate to the theme.

Here are our top 5 favorite Celebrity Coachella Looks:

  1. Lea Michelle at the Lacoste Party wearing a white tunic over a red bikini and adorable beige espadrilles:
  2. Rosie Huntington Whitely wearing White Tuxedo Shirt and Flower Power cut-off Shorts:
  3. Nina Dobrev wearing an easy breezy maxi dress, thick brown belt, and animal print sandals:
  4. Diane Kruger wearing a long flowy brown skirt and slinky black top rocking a statement hat:
  5. Alessandra Ambrosio wearing a sweet peasant dress dressed down with mid-thigh suede boots:

Typically, the autumn season stands as a time when fashion designers introduce new styles in their collections that they hope will become emerging trends. This time of daring and innovations is usually marked by both successes

and failures as designers go out on a limb. With so many fashion choices available to the consumer, making the right choices can feel like a game of hit and miss.

However, there are three stylish fashions for fall that can be utilized in the creation of a functional and impressive wardrobe.

One of this year’s top trends to emerge from the top name designers is what industry experts are dubbing the collage effect. Essentially, the designers are creating garments with a high degree of texture contrast by using a mixture of different materials, colors, and patterns. While this kind of collage arrangement is nothing new, the designers have taken the use of different textures and appearances to another level by being willing to use non-traditional combinations in their creation.

Taking cues from the work of Alexander McQueen from previous collections, designers such as Dries Van Noten and Mary Katrantzou are bringing a new flair to traditional skirts, dresses, sweaters, and o

ther pieces. While the majority of women will not be able to afford the cost of high design, the principles that drive the trend can be employed in any woman’s wardrobe. Combining materials like silk and wool or colors like gray and pink can deliver a strong contrast and catch a great deal of attention.

It may seem like homage to the 1950s and 1960s, but the use of polka dots by many top name designers is more than just a simple throwback to these decades.

Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs, and others have started bringing the spots back into the mainstream by using them in new and exciting ways. In several of McCartney’s new dresses, the polka dots do not conform to uniform lines and are used almost like sequins to decorate and add emphasis to the clean lines. Jill Stuart has offered a glimpse of how designers may use polka dots in the future. Her fall collection showed a willingness to use the spots as background decoration with solid colors attracting the main focus of her skirts and shirts.

The new trends for fall fashion are all well and good, but women may also prefer to keep things simple by staying true to the classic lines dictated by the colder time of year. Traditional autumn fashion never falls out of style and a woman can pick up pieces, such as a black or gray pea coat, that will last for many years and still be in vogue.

A general rule for timeless fall fashion is to keep to muted colors and put the emphasis on the cut of the clothing rather than abundant colors that are more suited for spring or summer months. Fall lines should are normally less curvy and focus more on function rather than form.

By saving this time of year for classic style, a woman will be able to build up an impressive wardrobe that allows her to keep pieces for many years.

Beth Ditto may not be a household name just yet, but she’s already establishing herself as an icon in certain circles: The underground music scene, and the usually exclusive world of high fashion.

In addition to fronting blues-punk-dance trio the Gossip, where she’s won fans for years with her considerable pipes and confrontational/celebratory stage presence, she is also a crusader for gay rights and fat acceptance.

“Fat” is not a word Ditto shies away from; in fact, she owns it and makes no bones about what it’s like to be a size 28 fashion plate:

“I don’t understand all these women who say they feel betrayed by fashion.

A piece of clothing can’t talk – it can’t tell you that you can’t have it – so really, you’re just telling yourself that.

You make yourself the victim, because if you want clothes that bad, then make them

yourself.

You have to get creative if you’re fat.”

No matter what size you are, it’s hard not to feel inspired by Beth’s unapologetic, can-do attitude.

She’s essentially telling women that they don’t have to commit themselves to “camouflaging” those extra pounds – they can flaunt them instead.

And flaunt them she did at Paris Fashion Week last Saturday, when she opened and closed Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring/summer 2011 show in two of his rock’n'roll-inspired frocks, pictured above.

She looks happy and confident, and at one point actually burst into song during her final walk, which ended with thunderous applause and an enthusiastic embrace from the legendary designer.

Could this be the beginning of true size acceptance in the world of haute couture, or do you think Beth is just an exception to the size zero rule

October is here!

And that means that you’re probably thinking about Halloween costumes, right

? Well, with the economy still in a rather sorry state, you may not have substantial amounts of cash to invest in a costume – but you can still m ake

an impression on October 31st.

Why not take a cue from Ms.

Tyra Banks herself, who made a splash at last night’s French Vogue 90th Anniversary Party in Paris

? All you’ll need is fishnet stockings and some scissors!

First, let me preface this by saying that the event was, indeed, a costume party, so Tyra’s fishnet face wasn’ t en

tirely out of place.

Also, she is wearing a super lovely Roberto Cavalli gown paired with minimal makeup and accessories – elegant and understated, right

? Well, from the neck down, at least.

From the neck up, she is wearing…fishnets on her face.

According to Tyra’s Twitter, the mask is “sum cheap FISHNET stocki ngs I got

n crazy store n Paris! I cut em up n made it y’all. N did my ow hair n makeup.” And lest you scoff, the old fishnet-on-the-head trick is actually startlingly similar to the fencing masks that Viktor & Rolf sent down the runway in 2008. So what do you think

? Is this a viable last minute Halloween costume idea, or total red carpet abomination

?

Tyra's fishnet mask is...

“Most of us weren’t blessed with perfect genes.

But we’re bringing you the next best thing: perfect jeans.

” – Paige Adams-Geller.

That is one of my favorite quotes from Paige Adams-Geller, the founder of Paige Premium Denim.  Any girl that has ever gone jean shopping can attest that it’s probably one of the most self-esteem damaging experiences ever.

We leave feeling too fat, or too skinny, or too tall, or too short.

It’ s hard to find a pair of jean

s that fit perfectly!

Well, Paige Premium Denim is probably one of my favorite brands of jeans.

I didn’t know that it was possible, but these jeans somehow make my legs longer and skinnier!  (And who doesn’t want a pair of pants that make your butt & legs look better?)  Isn’t that what every girl looks for in a pair of jeans

?   And Paige Adams-Geller knows her jeans.

She spent decades working behind the scenes at 7  for all Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, and True Religion.

I’m not a big fan of my True Religion jeans, but I love my Sevens and my Citizens

of Humanity jeans.

And I don’t like spending a lot of money on clothing.

But for great fitting jeans, it’ s totally worth it.

Celebrities that have been spotted in Paige jeans include: Jessica Alba, Rachel Bilson, Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Heidi Klum, Eva Longoria, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Cindy Crawford, and many many more!

Right now, Bloomspot is offering $100 worth of apparel at PaigeUSA.com for only $60!  Unlike other group deals, this one is only available in limited quantities, so hop on this offer ASAP!

Also, if you refer 3 friends that end up purchasing the deal, you can get your deal for free.  Awesome.

I am one of the biggest advocates you will find of keeping skin healthy now so you don’t have to resort to surgery or needles later so you’ll look young.  For me, that means washing my face every night, keeping my skin moisturized – face, neck and chest, – and wearing sunscreen, rain or shine.  So a headline over at Yahoo definitely piqued my interest:  5 Surprising Ways You’re Ruining Your Skin.  A few of the tips were not so surprising – getting enough rest and being a serious runner – were things I already knew about.  But hearing about the dangers of tap water and steam rooms were interesting to learn about.  But I would definitely add to the first tip about getting your prescriptions for your eyes up to date.  The idea is that if you have to squint with your glasses or contacts, then you may be contributing to fine lines around your eyes.  I would definitely add in the necessity for wearing sunglasses!  Not only are you likely to squint less with shade for your eyes, but when you wear large frames like Jennifer Aniston’s in this picture, then you are protecting that delicate tissue around your eyes even further – if you have sunglasses with UV protection.  You don’t have to get expensive sunglasses in order to have UV protection.  Just make sure you read the description on the sunglasses carefully and always opt for 100% UV protection.  It is better for your eyes, to help prevent cataracts, and it is better

for your skin, to help prevent wrinkles.

Ode To The Slip

Yes, this picture of Jessica Biel is from awhile back.  And, yes, I’m sure the fact that her undergarments were showing was some sort of brilliantly calculated designer choice.  She looks lovely, why wouldn’t she want to show off her granny panties?  Actually – it looks more like she is wearing some sort of control-top, Spanx-like underwear.  You know, the kind that sucks in your tummy too.  Stars!  They’ re just like us!

Here’s the thing:  Sometimes we try on dresses in fitting rooms or even at home and we don’t realize the transparency of the dress until we are out in less forgiving lighting.  Maybe that is what happened to Jessica.  But even if she knew her dress was sheer that doesn’t mean that we all want to wear sheer dresses.  In fact, I would argue that most of the dresses we wear these days could use a little help….hence the title of this post, Ode to

the Slip.

I love wearing dresses and skirts.  And these days I can really stock up on them because most of the dresses I get are from trendy, affordable stores – like Forever 21 or H&M or Old Navy.  Which is great BUT there is a reason these garments are so wallet-friendly:  Usually, they are cheaply made.  I don’t buy a dress from one of these places and think it’s going to last forever.  In fact, I usually buy dresses from there so I can embrace a current trend without investing too much money in a look that might be fleeting in the fickle world of fashion.  But herein lies the problem:  they are cheaply made and most likely don’ t have

the right lining.

Not to sound like a crotchety old lady….but I don’t want you to see my crotch.  And I most certainly don’t want to see yours.  And chances are, you don’t want me to either.  Which is why I consider this to be a public service announcement:

INVEST IN A SLIP

Invest in a couple.  Buy a few half-slips in a few different colors – nude, black, white.  They are affordable at places like Target and if you want to get fancy you can pick one up at a lingerie store.  It is kind of amazing what this thin piece of fabric can do to camouflage what’s under your thin piece of fabric dress.  With so many of us embracing dress-wearing by buying them from affordable places, it makes sense to kick it old school and wear a slip.   It is just a little tool th

Recommended: Goody Spin Pin

I am a huge fan of a messy bun.  Maybe it stems from my days of dance classes growing up or maybe it comes from not always taking the time to “do” my hair every morning.  Whatever it is, most days you can find me with my hair in a bun.  I have quite the assortment of bobby pins of all shapes, styles and colors….and now I don’t know what to do with them….

….Because I bought a phone book

The package comes with two spin pins but since my hair is so thin, I’ve only needed to use one to keep my bun in place.  One pin!  Normally I use five or 6 bobby pins and they fall out throughout the day and I have to constantly restyle.  But with the Spin Pin I take my hair, twirl it into a bun and then take my Spin Pin and twist it up into the bun from the bottom like it’ s a cork

screw.

And I’m done.  It is unbelievably simple and holds into place remarkably well.  Women with thicker hair – I’m looking at you, Melissa – will probably need to use both pins but, still, I’m pretty sure you’re going to love it.  Plus!  You aren’t limited to just creating a “messy bun” – you can do several different up-dos with ease.  I have several weddings to attend in the next few months…guess how I’m doing my hair….

Has anyone else tried the Spin Pin yet?  Are you loving it as much as me?  Or did it not work for you?  I’m curious! Let us know with a comment…

Drew Loves Her...

We do love Drew around Latest Beauty headquarters and one of the things that is most appealing about her is her ability to seem so down to earth, despite having been in the spotlight since, well, practically birth.  Case in point:  Here on the left is Drew this past Monday in LA for the red carpet premiere of Going The Distance.  And on the left is Drew in NY yesterday for a visit to David Letterman.  Notice anything similar?  Look down…

She is rocking the same grey suede pumps at both events.

And looking fabulous while doing it!

The style and color of the shoe are the perfect where-anywhere combination.  At more formal events or as business casual, the neutral suede is one of the ideal buys for the fall.  So, of course, I did a little shopping around for you (and me).

I like this wedge option from MaxStudio that I found over at DSW.  I am forever clumsy in heels, so a wedge helps me to be less of a klutz.   If you are more adept at handling heels like a grown up, a la the lovely Drew, then you can check out these pumps from Steve Madden.  Either w ay is

a very cool and classy way to go!

UPDATE:

Spotted!  Drew wore her favorite shoes, yet again, when she stopped by The Daily Show on Wednesday, the day this was posted:

Girlfriend knows how to pack for a road trip!  And, by the by, ShoppingtheTrend.com has identified Drew’s shoes as YSL Tribtoo Platform Pumps.  If you’re in the market for a shoe splurge, this might be the one to sink your dollars into.  Drew is clearly getting her money’s worth!

Fall fashions are in full swing at the stores right now, and just in time for the back to school season, Forever 21 has unveiled their “I LOVE NERDS” collection. Although the styling for the website re ally drives home the nerdiness of the colleciton, most of the individu

al pieces

are actually schoolgirl-sexy, from butt on-fr

ont miniskirts to knee highs

to a more body-conscious take on the classic letterman jacket.

All in all, this collection skews a little young for me, but I think the whole nerd chic thing is a pretty cute idea – albeit one that can probably be achieved for even less money than you would spend at Forever21 if you’re willing to spend a weekend combing the thrift s

tores. What do you think – are you a nerd lover or do you prefer fashion that’s a little less…awkward?

It’s not e asy being

a shoe lover on

a budget.

Designer shoes are well out of your reach, and cheap shoes look…well, cheap. Given these circumstances, it can be extremely challenging to keep up with the latest trends, or even revamp your shoe wardro

be for the coming season.

But with fall on the horizon, I’m sure my fellow footwea

r fetishists are on the hunt for some way to grab a new p

air of boots without breaking the bank.

I recommend checking out the Dolce Vita for Target collection, which hits stores this month.

All of the styles, which include flats, oxfords and boots, are under $40. I’m particularly fond of the buckle ankle boots – part Michael Jackson circa Bad, part Alison Mosshart (of the Kills and the Dead Weather) – and the lace-up boots. What do you think of this collection

? And if you’ re not down with Target, what sto

res do you visit for af
