pradaI have to ask:

If money was inconsequential, would you wear these Prada OTK boots??

I got an email this morning from Neiman Marcus, harking the arrival of Prada’s fall collection and this over-the-knee boot was the main attraction. They definitely caught my attention but my first thought was, who would wear these?

In my mind’s eye, I can picture a crazy night on the town…but then I also pictured myself falling flat on my face because of the height of the heel. And then I started thinking about how sweaty it would be inside these. Sigh…I wish I could be less practical when it comes to Prada…

Regardless, this is not the first over-the-knee-boot sighting that has occurred in my inbox. It seems that OTK boot are getting their post-Pretty Woman revival this fall and you are going to see it as a Fall Fashion Trend. So the real question is…

Would you rock over-the-knee boots?

heather Put this in the “hard to wear but hot right now” file - right next to jumpsuits, perhaps? It may seem somewhat improbable, but after seeing this look on both Fergie and Heather Graham at recent high-profile events, I’m ready to call it: Cutout dresses just might become a trend! I doubt it will sweep the nation, since you have to be a) very fit and b) very courageous to make this look work, but don’t be surprised if you catch sight of this sexy trend in the club or at a party. While I’m not loving Fergie’s sparkly silver and green take on the cutout dress, I’m also not hating Heather’s more polished black cocktail number. (That’s not to say that I would actually wear either one!) What do you think? Are you into this or do you wish these ladies would hire different stylists and put us out of our fashion observer misery?

I’m not a fan of tie-dye. The garish colors, the self-consciously retro feel of it…it doesn’t even make me think of the ’60s - it just looks like a bad parody of the ’60s. Thinking of tie-dye, I just can’t conjure up any actual hippies in my mind’s eye. All I can picture is a cheesy Halloween costume, like this one:
tie_dyeSpare me! Needless to say, tie-dye isn’t something I could ever imagine myself wearing. Ombre, sure - that’s not even straight up tie-dye, more like its sophisticated, sober second cousin. Then I saw this elegant little summer dress from Mod Cloth, and my mind was changed:

tie-dye-for-dressThis is actually really cute! And subtle, not over-the-top! It doesn’t look like the type of thing you would wear with an oversized peace symbol medallion or a hat with dreadlocks sew into it! I can’t believe it, but I guess I actually like tie-dye…wow. Are there any fashion trends you thought you loathed but then suddenly found yourself liking? Let me know!

In the mood for more cute dresses? Then check out our post on Faith21, Forever 21’s new plus-sized line!

faith21It’s crazy given their popularity, but Forever 21 hasn’t had a plus size line until now! It’s called Faith21, and it’s full of the same cute, affordable, trendy fashions that put the original on the map. What I like best about it is that it doesn’t patronize plus-size ladies: The looks are, for the most part, figure-flattering and feminine, not boxy or oversized. Check out the sexy-yet-classy retro look of this Japanese Blossom Sleek Dress - only $24.80! The high waist, slimming black skirt and removable belt will help play up your curves without breaking the bank. What do you think of Faith 21?

Trend Alert: Cage Sandals

gaultierLast summer, gladiator sandals were all the rage. While the trend is still going strong, gladiators may have to move over: There’s a new shoe trend in town. Celebs and non-famous fashionistas alike are now fawning over cage sandals. f21Like gladiators, these sexy sandals take the multi-strap approach, which lends them an intimidating air of toughness. Unlike gladiators, however, cage sandals are far more feminine, with their towering heels and vaguely ’80s vibe. I keep picture them on women with structured dresses and severe shoulder pads! Of course, they look even better when paired with a more modern silhouette. Are you feelin’ the cage sandal? If you’ve got some money stashed away, feel free to indulge in the $799 pair from Jean Paul Gaultier (pictured at left). As for me, I prefer this decidedly more affordable version from Forever 21: Black, buckled and just $29.80. Which pair do you prefer?

Kate Moss and Marc Jacobs at the Met's Costume Institute Ball 2009

Kate Moss and Marc Jacobs at the Met's Costume Institute Ball 2009

Every year, the biggest names in fashion, entertainment and New York City society gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a fabulous party known as the Costume Institute Gala. Celebs bring out the big guns for this ball, throwing sartorial caution to the wind and donning frequently over-the-top ensembles to mark the occasion. If you are a fashion follower, you’re probably aware that the 2009 Met gala just took place last week - and the stars were definitely out in full force. This year, the theme was “Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion,” so it is terribly appropriate that my pick

Madonna in Louis Vuitton

for Best Dressed of the evening goes to none other than Supermodel Extraordinaire Kate Moss, who looks absolutely otherworldly in this modern take on the toga, done in shimmering liquid silver. The platform pumps and matching headdress complete the look. Only Kate could pull off something this extreme with such nonchalance! And for Worst Dressed, we have another diva: Madonna, in her Louis Vuitton mini dress, thigh high boots, and totally inexplicable hair piece. Who are your picks for Best and Worst Dressed of the night? Let me know in a comment!

Think Madonna looks insane? Check out Lady Gaga’s no-pants fashion statement! You won’t believe this!

katieKatie Holmes went solo earlier this week to an event for the Independent Filmmaker Project and everyone is buzzing about her outfit.  Here’s the thing:  Mrs. Cruise has carved herself out a nice little nook in the fashion landscape and since she hasn’t done much beyond being Mrs. Cruise lately, her fashion choices are always an interesting topic.  What makes this choice more interesting is that she is wearing a jumpsuit, which always seems to get mixed reactions.  Personally, I’m in favor of jumpsuits but there are plenty of people who disagree with me.  I particularly like this one because of the twisted halter top and slouchy fit.  But I have to leave this fashion choice up to you, dear Latest Beauty-iers:

Is Katie's Jumpsuit a Hit or Miss?

Julia Roberts: Classic Style

juliaI love that Julia Roberts is back on the scene.  It’s been a little while since she worked the red carpet but she hasn’t lost any of her megawatt power.  InStyle chose her appearance at the Lincoln Center to honor Tom Hanks as their “Look of the Day” and she looks great.  She is wearing a Dolce and Gabbana ensemble, which isn’t exactly in my price range, but the pieces are so classic and simple that we could all take a cue from this Pretty Woman and recreate her style at any price point.

bananarepublicA black and white color palette always looks fresh, which is somehow surprising to me since it is such a classic staple.  But I never tire of it.  Finding an a-line white dress for spring is on my list of “must-do” and Banana Republic has great option that is on sale.  For a black cardigan I’d head straight to J.Crew for a summer weight cashmere version.  As for the platform black pumps?  Steve Madden has you covered.

Jessica Alba rocks her mom jeans in Beverly Hills.

Jessica Alba rocks her mom jeans in Beverly Hills.

Jessica Alba is known for her amazing body and sex appeal. So what are we to make of these mom jeans she was seen wearing to a reception at Tod’s Boutique on Rodeo Drive? On one hand, I dig the retro ’70s vibe of her outfit, and she certainly looks polished and pulled together. But on the other hand…high-waisted jeans? Really? This is a trend that’s been trying to come back for some time now, and it seems that most women just aren’t having it. What say you to the mom jeans phenomenon? Hot or not?

What do you think of Jessica Alba in her mom jeans?

I wouldn’t go so far as to say that I’m a Lady Gaga fan - I actually know precious little about the woman. (In fact, before consulting her Wikipedia entry, I thought she was British! In reality, she’s from Yonkers. What!?) In any event, every time I see a picture of her out and about, only one question leaps to mind: Young lady, whither your pants?! Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Ms. Gaga wearing anything close to a complete outfit. Observe:

gaga3gaga2

I get that she has a “look,” but isn’t this a little ridiculous? To be fair, I did find one shot of Lady Gaga wearing…well, if not pants, then bottoms, at least: A skin-tight rubber skirt. On top? Um, nothing but a bra. Well, at least she’s consistent!

Love This Cardigan

cardiganLove sales, love cardigans - basically it’s a day of love.  I love the bright mustard yellow of this cardigan, making it a great match for all seasons.  I love the long length, which gives it extra comfy value and versatility, since it would work great with a dress or jeans.  And I love that it is on sale for $34.99, down from $68.  And since it is from Gap, I have a feeling if I got it in the store, I could probably get it even cheaper.

Dressing Down Sequins

betsey-johnsondeliasWhen you hear the word “sequins,” what comes to mind? ’80s formal wear? New Year’s Eve? Vegas showgirls? Well, banish those thoughts from your mind: Sequined dresses are back, and they can be surprisingly…subtle. Pair a shimmery black sequined minidress with a cotton blazer (structured or slouchy - pretty much anything goes) and you have a look that’s perfect for any date or party, day or night. Keep your makeup and jewelry understated and pair the dress with simple flats or chic sandals to avoid looking overly glitzy. My picks for dresses: This lovely scoopneck babydoll dress by Betsey Johnson, available at Urban Outfitters (on sale for $179.99, down from $360!), and the even more affordable ($29.99) Fiona Sequin Dress from Delia*s. Pretty much any casual blazer will work with these two, but my favorite is the “Working for the Weekend” blazer from ModCloth, in ladylike soft gray. What do you think? Will you be embracing dressed down sequins, or is this all a little too Dynasty for your tastes?

Sequins: Fun, fug or forgettable?

banana-republicWhen Banana Republic has a sale, I know I’m in trouble.  Without fail I will find a piece (or several) that I don’t know how I lived without before.  Like this circle print pleated skirt.  I can picture it dressed up with heels and a structured top or dressed down with a casual tank and strappy flats.  It goes perfectly with my new black and white obsession and at $32 (originally $69), it is hard to pass up.  And, of course, there is much more marked down - from dresses to shoes to accessories and more - up to nearly 50% off.  Happy Shopping!

I Heart RonsonI Heart RonsonI Heart Ronson

Lindsay Lohan fans are already well-acquainted with DJ Samantha Ronson. But did you know that her sister, Charlotte, is an established fashion designer? If you’re not already in the know, her affordable new line for JCPenney, I Heart Ronson, is an excellent entry point. Here are three looks I love: This slightly edgy cardigan/racerback tank/skinny jeans combo, this pretty floral V-neck dress, and this adorably ladylike, slightly ’70s tie-back sweater paired with a ruffled blouse and trouser jeans. The best part, of course, is the price: All of these pieces are currently on sale, and nothing shown here costs more than $40! Shop away.

The Sneaky Sweatshirt

peacoatHad to share my latest shopping find with you!  I am always on the lookout for pieces that are chic-looking yet comfortable.  The more of these pieces that I’m able to add to my wardrobe, the more I’m able to look “effortlessly” pulled together.  And I was just ruminating about how I need a sweatshirt-type of jacket that is not a hoodie and somehow looks polished.  Basically a nice-looking, lightweight layer (that isn’t a cardigan) that I could wear to meetings and on flights and not-just-to-the-gym that would be sharp and secretly comfy.

I walked into Gap and voila!  My ruminating came to fruition!  Behold their fleece peacoat.  Which was originally $58 but that I got for $19.99 yesterday.  Online it’s listed on sale at $23 and with limited sizes and only in navy.  I got the navy version but they also had an awesome gray one in the stores.  But they are going fast…Run, don’t walk.  And you’re welcome.
