According to Self and the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Medicine, there are four basic habits you can adopt that may add up to 14 years to your life.
1. Exercise. It’s a no-brainer! You don’t have to go to the gym every other day. Just find something you love to do, be it swimming, going for walks around your neighborhood, doing crunches while watching TV - anything you enjoy doing - and do it! It’s that simple.
2. Don’t smoke. Again, duh. Even when you set aside the more obvious and severe health risks like cancer and emphysema, smoking tarnishes your teeth, dulls your skin and makes it harder for you to do #1 (exercise!).
3. Eat lots of fresh produce. Fruits and veggies are the key to nutrition! Make them the biggest staple of your diet and you’ll start reaping rewards immediately (more energy, better skin, weight loss) and in the long term (ward off heart disease).
4. Drink in moderation. Sure, throw back one or two from time to time, but no more binge drinking on the weekends! Don’t make alcohol the focal point of your social life, and your body will thank you for it.
That’s it! Make an effort to incorporate these habits into your daily routine and you could live almost a decade and a half longer than you would have otherwise. Pretty remarkable!
