It’s about that time: People’s list of the 100 Most Beautiful People in the World is in, and the results are mixed. The issue doesn’t hit newsstands until Friday, so I haven’t seen the complete list yet, but from the sneak previews, it seems that their choices can be divided into three categories: The good, the played out and the inexplicable. What do I mean? Read on…
Category 1: THE GOOD
Comprised of interesting, independently-minded ladies like Juno star Ellen Page, offensive-yet-amusing comedian/actress Sarah Silverman, and Six Feet Under alum Lauren Ambrose, these are the interesting, somewhat left-of-center choices that seem to be based on more than just looks alone. These women are pretty, but they’re also unique, and that’s what makes them beautiful.
Category 2: THE PLAYED OUT
Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie - yeah, we get it, they’re gorgeous! Do we really need to be reminded of it on a regular basis? Even cover girl Kate Hudson and the spicy Salma Hayek (a personal favorite of mine) are regular entries on every publication’s rundown of Hollywood’s prettiest people. I’m not saying they’re not deserving - I just think it might be time to give some new faces a turn in the spotlight.
Category 3: THE INEXPLICABLE
Rumer Willis: Famous for having famous parents. Miley Cyrus: Famous for making little girls shriek with joy while raking in loads of cash for Disney. Nicole Richie: Famous for being, at best, being Paris Hilton’s annoying ex-sidekick and, at worst, far too skinny. I’m not making any comment on these ladies’ attractiveness (or lack thereof) - I’m just pointing out that none of them have had the career to warrant a spot on this list! You just haven’t earned it yet, baby.
Oh, and Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson as the Most Beautiful Couple? No. Just…no. A bass player more famous for popularizing the unfortunate "guyliner" trend than for his music, and the poster girl for nepotism and rhinoplasty? I haven’t seen a single picture of these two where they don’t look like they’re trying way, way too hard.
So what do you think of People’s list? Who should’ve been included and who should get booted?
