To borrow a phrase from Will Smith, a.k.a the Fresh Prince, “Take it from me - boys just don’t understand.” What am I talking about? Well, according to an opinion piece by “Jake” (Glamour’s resident dude) in the mag’s June ‘09 issue, there are a number of girlie beauty habits that men find puzzling - if not downright annoying. They include anti-aging “cures,” padded bras, living in heels, “Spanx and other girdle thingies” (his words, not mine!), obsessive leg shaving and “wake-up makeup” (i.e., putting on makeup first thing in the morning). This got me thinking about my own personal experiences; what does my boyfriend not quite “get” about my beauty routine? In addition to being flummoxed by things like eyebrow plucking and the removal of nail polish, one thing he definitely thinks I overdo is good, old-fashioned hair brushing. Now, I don’t think I overdo it - I’m no Marcia “100-strokes-a-day” Brady! - but apparently in his mind, brushing in the morning and at night (and, oh, perhaps a few times in between as well…) is overkill. I think it’s just because my hair is long and thick and prone to tangles…but in any case, I have certainly been asked, “Why do you brush your hair so much?”
So what are your thoughts, ladies? Does the man in your life “get” your beauty routine, or does he think you’re a little too obsessive about your appearance? Let me know in a comment!
