Are we finally reaching the end of the skeletal-is-sexy era? If this article, which claims that "Not-quite-so-thin is in for models at Fashion Week," is correct, then the answer may be YES. Women everywhere, rejoice! Throw your hands in the air! Eat something! Stop feeling bad about your bones being masked by that pesky little thing called flesh! All kidding aside, I think it would be a tremendous step in the right direction for designers to stop showing their creations on women who are so frightfully skinny. This is not to say, however, that runway models will now be hightailing it to the nearest Krispy Kreme; according to the article, models are now a size 2 or a 4 instead of a 0, and some designers even "rejected prepubescent 13-year-olds." Hm…baby steps. Personally, I would love to see the fashion industry return to glorifying women who, slender as they are, look like they actually eat and exercise, as opposed to women who are clearly unhealthy. See Christie Brinkley vs. two current runway models for comparison:
I know there are those who argue that fashion is fantasy and that models should be held to "higher" standards than the average woman - the whole model-as-clothes-hanger argument - but I think we can all agree that there is something seriously wrong with any industry that tells a 15-year-old girl, "’You need to lose more weight. The look this year is anorexia. We don’t want you to be anorexic but that’s what we want you to look like.’"
So what do you think? Are super skinny models on their way out?
