Being married to a finance guy, I’m more aware of the state of the stock market and big business than I have been in the past. Even though we’ve been in a bit of a grim economic state all year, some major stuff has been going down this week. So I thought today I would write about how everyone in the beauty world is dealing with this economic downturn. Are you buying less? Thrifting more? Shopping sales only? That kind of thing. But then I read today that:
E-tailing is booming despite the terrible economy, since customers are more comfortable shopping online. Retail executives expect the annual average 25 percent growth rate in online sales to continue. (The Cut)
Which has changed the angle of my original post idea. Because now I’m extra curious about where you do most of your shopping: In stores or in cyberspace?
For me, I tend to do a lot of my pre-shopping online. A hazard of the job, I guess. I love to pour through online shops and see what is out there. But I hate paying shipping if I can pick it up in the store. Plus I really like to try on things. It helps that I live within walking or biking distance to two major malls and Melrose (love Melrose shops!). But I will cybershop if it’s a unique piece that is only available online. However, I do have a hard time justifying paying full price for clothes. But that might just be in my nature and not a side effect of the economy. I also have been trying to make the most of what I already have and wearing things I still like but have been tucked away in the back of my dresser.
As far as beauty products go, I will spend extra money on them. But I buy products that last a long time (Fresh, Bare Minerals), which justifies a splurge to me. But again, I go to the stores and not online for these products.
So how about you? Have you seen your shopping habits changed because of the economy? Any good money-saving tips to share?
